Over 50’s triumph in Bexhill

Captain and manager for the day Darren Angel picked up the trophy, it was probably the only thing he did well all day!

Maidstone United over 50’s travelled to Sussex on Saturday to take part in the inaugural Old Bexhillians walking football tournament.

With a tough looking group ahead on a warm day they got off to a perfect start against Insulators with a 1-0 win courtesy of a fine finish from Jay Gerrish, they then played out a 0-0 draw against our old friends and foes from Woodnesborough although a few chances did go begging. It was a good start from a team that are notoriously slow starters.

They followed that up with a controlled victory against Worthing, Steve Bunn moving up from the back finishing a fine team passing move. Jay then bagged himself a hattrick in a comfortable win against Hastings and we finished the group with a 1-0 loss against the rather robust hosts (they basically kicked the sh*t out of us).

This was to be the only goal conceded all day, keeper Gary Mills was in fine form, as we went onto beat Range Rovers in the semi final with a Dave Abbott toe punt and Eastbourne in the final with a fine strike from Steve Bunn from a Vince Luckhurst corner.  Mick Smithson, playing predominantly in midfield, kept the team ticking over with a typical tenacious performance all day.
