WalkingSTONES Tournament 2024

The Gallagher Stadium hosts 50s and 60s walking football tournament

The WalkingSTONES hosted their annual tournament at the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday 27 April 2024 where twenty two teams across 50s and 60s age categories went head to head.

In the 50s competition, after the group stages, the semi finals saw Maidstone United WalkingSTONES take on Canterbury and Range Rovers played Woodnesborough. Both were tight games keenly contested with fine margins making the difference. At the end of the 15 minutes Canterbury and Woodnesborough won the right to play each other in the final.

The final saw two well matched teams go head to head. They had played each other in the group stages with Woodnesborough winning 2-0. The two teams went head to head again and, in another tight game, the result mirrored that of the earlier meeting Woodnesborough winning 2-0 again to win the trophy for the second year running.

In the 60s competition Maidstone United WalkingSTONES had a team in each group (Maidstone Ambers and Maidstone Blacks). At the end of the group stages Maidstone Blacks were sitting top of their group while the Ambers finished 2nd in their group. This set up a head to head of  between the two WalkingSTONES teams in the first semi final and the Canterbury 60s making the semi’s to play Ashford in the other. In the first semi, Maidstone Blacks put the Ambers to the sword, running out 4-0 winners against the Ambers who barely had a shot on goal. The second semi was a much tighter affair and at the end of normal time neither team had managed to score, penalties beckoned. In a tense penalty shoot-out Ashford made it through to the final winning 3-2.

The final of the 60s again saw two teams challenge to win the trophy having already met in the group stages. Maidstone Blacks ran out winners in the group game in what was an extremely close game winning 1-0 with a goal in the final minute. The final was as equally closely fought with Maidstone going one goal ahead. Ashford had a chance to equal the score being awarded a penalty after 4 running offences by the WalkingSTONES. A great save by STONES keeper Mick Wiggins saw the Blacks hang on to win the trophy which was an improvement on the previous year when they lost in the final on penalties.
