Stones in the community Women’s WalkingSTONES capped off an unforgettable day by lifting the tournament trophy, a moment that perfectly captures the team’s remarkable rise in just over 12 months.

After a year of limited match action due to a shortage of local opposition, the invitation from Tonbridge Angels to take part in a round robin tournament was seized with both hands. Introductions made at the International Women’s Day football event on 7 March led to a fantastic day of competitive but friendly football on Saturday 11 April, as Maidstone faced Tonbridge Angels and Bromley at Tonbridge’s home ground.

From first Steps to big strides

The progress since last year was impossible to ignore. At their very first tournament, barely a month into many players’ football journeys, our women lost every match and didn’t manage to score. But spirits never dropped – the experience lit a spark.

Fast forward a year and the transformation was clear. Results improved, confidence soared, goals were scored, and the team arrived ready to compete.

Taking the game to the best

The opening clash against hosts Tonbridge Angels set the tone. Facing a large, experienced, and well drilled squad, Maidstone pushed hard from start to finish. A superb goal from Lisa helped keep the contest alive, and although the game ended in a narrow 2–1 defeat, the overriding feeling was one of pride and the belief that a result had been there for the taking.

Momentum carried into the next match against Bromley. Determined and attacking, Maidstone responded brilliantly after falling behind, with Chanel coolly converting two penalties to haul the team back level. A heartbreaking last minute goal saw Bromley edge a 3–2 win, but Maidstone’s performance spoke volumes.

Drama, determination and penalties

With Bromley also having lost to Tonbridge, the two sides met again in a ‘semi final’ showdown. Buoyed by glowing comments from the referee and clearly benefiting from the coaching of Tori and Nathan, Maidstone were fired up to put things right.

After a tense, hard fought 1–1 draw, it went to penalties. Step forward keeper Beth. Two outstanding saves from the “super keeper” turned the tide, and with every Maidstone penalty dispatched confidently, a place in the final was secured.

Holding nerve when it mattered most

The final was a showcase of grit and belief. Our WalkingSTONES dominated possession, defended tirelessly, and refused to be beaten. Beth produced a stunning double save to earn the Keeper of the Day award as the match finished goalless once again.

Penalties beckoned, nerves jangling, hearts racing. Maidstone held their nerve, winning the shootout 3–2 after two missed spot kicks from Tonbridge sealed the outcome.

More than a trophy

In just over a year, this team has gone from tentative first kicks to standing toe to toe with some of the strongest sides in the area and coming out on top. Blending newcomers with experienced, incredibly patient players, Stones in the Community Women’s WalkingSTONES now competes with confidence, quality, and a huge smile.

Every match is played in the right spirit: supportive, inclusive, and full of joy. If ever there was proof that football can bring people together and change lives, this team is it.
